L-carnitine is naturally created in the body. In healthy individuals, including vegetarians, enough L-carnitine is generally created to prevent a deficiency. However, our body's need for L-carnitine increases as we age.* Acetyl-L-carnitine (ALCAR) is the acetylated form of L-carnitine. The bioavailability of ALCAR is thought to be higher than L-carnitine.*
According to the Linus Pauling Institute, "Tissue L-carnitine levels have been found to decline with age in humans and animals." But there is something we can do about it. "In humans, administration of 2 grams of ALCAR per day for 50 days increased plasma ALCAR levels by 43%." 1
